Resources

Mountain Forest Sunset

Therapy often continues outside the session. I have curated this list of books, podcasts, and tools to support the work we do together. These are resources I frequently recommend to clients navigating faith transitions, identity, trauma, and personal growth.

Sexual Orientation, Faith & Identity

  • The Velvet Rage by Alan Downs, Ph.D.

    • An essential guide for gay men navigating the shame often caused by growing up in environments where they had to hide their authentic selves.

  • Cruise Control by Robert Weiss, LCSW

    • A specialized resource for gay men wanting to understand and manage out-of-control sexual behavior without the toxic shame often found in traditional recovery models.

Trauma & Inner Work (IFS)

  • No Bad Parts by Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.

    • The most accessible introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS). It helps you understand that your "anxiety" or "addictions" are actually protective parts trying to keep you safe.

  • The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.

    • This book validates the physical symptoms of trauma, explaining why "talk therapy" alone sometimes isn't enough to heal deep religious or relational wounds.

  • Waking the Tiger by Peter A. Levine, Ph.D.

    • A gentle guide to healing trauma through the body, offering a hopeful perspective that we are not "permanently broken."

Practical Tools & Relationships

  • Get Out of Your Mind & Into Your Life by Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D.

    • A practical workbook based on ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). It is excellent for overcoming the paralysis of fear and moving toward what matters most.

  • Atomic Habits by James Clear

    • When trying to make major changes in our lives, we often lose our old structures or have difficulty replacing old structures. This book helps you build a new routine and life structure on your own terms.

  • Attached by Amir Levine, M.D. & Rachel Heller, M.A.

    • Essential for navigating dating and relationships, helping you understand why you might feel anxious or avoidant when getting close to others.

Recommended Podcasts

  • Listen, Learn & Love (Hosted by Richard Ostler)

    • A platform of honest stories that validates the LDS LGBTQ+ experience. (See my episodes in the 'About Me' section).

  • Therapy Brothers (Hosted by Tyler & Braden Reed)

    • Why: Hosted by two licensed therapists (who are also brothers), this podcast offers practical, down-to-earth advice on everyday mental health struggles like anxiety, relationship conflict, and self-worth. It’s approachable, relatable, and less intimidating than academic resources.

  • All Out in the Open (Hosted by Ben Schilaty & Charlie Bird)

    • A safe resource for those who are determined to stay in the Church and are looking for examples of how to navigate that path healthily.
